As Australia's team of 419 athletes head over to Rio de Janeiro to compete in 26 sports at the 2016 Summer Olympics, University of Sydney senior lecturer in skill acquisition and sports psychology, Dr Steve Cobley, has poured some cold water on commonly held beliefs surrounding how one goes from the liminal stage of being an aspiring child dreaming of replicating their heroes to becoming such a powerhouse in their chosen pursuit.
