UNSW appoints new geotechnical mining Chair

Dr Fidelis Suorineni has been appointed the Chair of Mine Geotechnical Engineering at UNSW.  Suorineni, an international mining expert with research and consultancy experience across three continents, accepted this post in June. The Ghanaian national has spent the last 14 years working as a researcher and adjunct professor at Laurentian University in Sudbury, Ontario – a major hard rock mining hub in Canada. He was a senior research engineer at Laurentian’s Geomechanics Research Centre and its MIRARCO Mining Innovation research institute, and taught courses in advanced rock mechanics, tunneling and underground mining methods. He has also worked as a senior lecturer at the University of Science and Technology in Kumasi, Ghana, and has published more than 90 technical papers in journals and conference proceedings. He has also consulted for mining companies such as Goldcorp and Vale. The Chair is funded by UNSW with additional support from Rio Tinto Northparkes Mines – a copper and gold mine in central NSW.
