Sydney University reappoints Spence

Dr Michael Spence has been reappointed as vice-chancellor and principal of the University of Sydney for another five-year term. The chancellor, Professor Marie Bashir, said Spence has made a significant contribution to the university and even in a time of fiscal challenge has brought about major improvements. “He has personally guided and supported the development and implementation of an indigenous education strategy and the social inclusion policy, and the launch of a new Master of Business Administration in the Business School,” Bashir said. In his first term as VC, Spence initiated a number of significant changes including the development and implementation of a new five-year strategic plan for which he was commended in an independent audit by the federal government’s Tertiary Education Quality and Standards Agency (TEQSA) in 2012. Prior to taking up the position of vice-chancellor, he held one of four senior positions at the University of Oxford as head of the Social Sciences Division.
